Some of the organizations Opposing
AB 2747 (Berg) and what they are saying:
La Raza Roundtable de California - While this legislation
purports to be about hospice care and patients' rights it only serves
a narrow agenda - future legalization of assisted suicide. AB 2747 seeks
to establish pro-assisted suicide organizations as end-of-life counselors...
Association of Northern California Oncologists - Simply
put, ANCO objects to
AB 2747 because it purports to mandate specific treatment options at
the end of life. Specifically: All references to VSED should be removed
since this is not a medical treatment.
Disability Rights, Education and Defense Fund (DREDF)
- Thus, the potential effect of AB 2747 is extremely broad and cause irrevocable
harm to many people who may be mistakenly diagnosed as terminal but who
have many meaningful years of life ahead of them... Requiring end-of-life
referrals and discussion at a time that is not appropriate can cause significant
emotional and psychological distress or worse.
California League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)
- This bill transforms the accepted, but rare, medical practice of "palliative
sedation" (sedating a suffering and imminently-dying patient to the
point of unconsciousness) into a vehicle for slow assisted suicide by
making the withdrawal of food and fluids part of the practice's legal
definition...AB 2747 is a vehicle for slow assisted suicide and a platform
for future expansion. It is incompatible with basic human rights and Latino
values.
